Help Shape the Future of Young Football Athletes

Thank you for your interest in coaching with Kingston Minor Football League (KMFL).

KMFL is a recreational youth tackle football league, distinct from rep or high-performance programs. Our mandate is to introduce and develop young athletes in the game of football through structured practices, meaningful game play, and age-appropriate competition, all within a safe, supportive, and development-first environment.

While KMFL is not a rep program, we firmly believe there is an important and healthy place for competition within recreational sport. Kids play to compete, to try their best, and to succeed — and we embrace that. At the same time, we place equal importance on teaching athletes that winning is not everything, and that learning how to lose with resilience, respect, and perspective is one of sport’s most valuable life lessons.

If you are passionate about teaching football, mentoring young athletes, and coaching within a recreational competition model, we would love to hear from you.

What Coaching With KMFL Looks Like

Coaching with KMFL means balancing competition and development in a way that serves the long-term growth of every athlete.

KMFL coaches are expected to:

  • Put athlete safety, development, and enjoyment first
  • Teach age-appropriate football fundamentals
  • Encourage healthy competition, effort, and teamwork
  • Help athletes understand that trying your best matters more than the scoreboard
  • Teach athletes how to win with humility and lose with grace
  • Support equal participation and inclusive team environments
  • Model sportsmanship, respect, and positive leadership
  • Follow KMFL rules, policies, and long-term athlete development principles

Winning matters — but it is not the measure of success. Success is measured by skill development, confidence, resilience, and a positive relationship with sport.

Our Recreational Competition Philosophy (LTAD-Aligned)

KMFL follows Football Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) framework and applies it within a recreational league structure.

This means:

  • Athletes learn skills progressively and safely
  • Contact is introduced in a structured, age-appropriate manner
  • Practices focus on learning and development, not specialization or performance outcomes
  • Games provide a competitive environment that reinforces learning
  • Athletes are encouraged to compete hard, respect opponents, and reflect on outcomes
  • Long-term success, character, and well-being are prioritized over short-term results

Football, like life, does not guarantee wins. KMFL believes that helping young athletes learn how to process disappointment, manage emotions, and keep perspective after a loss is just as important as celebrating success.

Time Commitment & Involvement

Although KMFL is recreational, coaching remains a meaningful responsibility. Transparency is important so expectations are clear.

Coaches are asked to commit to:

  • Two practices per week
  • One game per week
  • One weekly virtual coaches’ meeting (approximately 1 hour)
  • Occasional community or league-wide events

Consistency, communication, and presence are essential to creating a positive competitive environment for athletes.

Support, Training & Screening

KMFL supports coaches throughout the season and emphasizes education, mentorship, and alignment over prior competitive experience.

Coaches are expected to:

  • Complete required coach education (including NCCP training)
  • Participate in league meetings and development opportunities
  • Complete required background screening to ensure athlete safety
  • Work collaboratively within a league-wide coaching team

Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)

All KMFL coaches and on-field volunteers must complete a Vulnerable Sector Check.

  • Must be current (within the last 2 years)
  • KMFL can provide a confirmation letter if required
  • Applications are completed through your local police service or OPP

National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP)

All KMFL coaches must be registered with the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

  • You will receive an NCCP number upon registration
  • Your NCCP number is required as part of your KMFL coaching application

  • New coaches must attend a virtual or in-person Safe Contact workshop
  • Safe Contact 2.0 Refresher is for experienced coaches
  • All coaches must complete the Safe Contact 2.0 Refresher every 5 years

Is Coaching With KMFL Right for You?

You may be a great fit for KMFL if you:

  • Believe in healthy competition within a recreational setting
  • Care about development, character, and confidence
  • Enjoy teaching young athletes how to win well and lose well
  • Value teamwork, communication, and community
  • Are willing to learn and grow as a coach
  • Want to help athletes build skills that extend beyond football

If your primary interest is elite competition, selection-based programming, or performance-driven outcomes, a rep program may be a better fit — and KMFL is proud to play a different but equally important role in the football pathway.
